When people think about how to adapt to climate change, often they focus on managing climate risk: the climate hazards such as droughts or floods that people are exposed to. But understanding climate adaptation more systematically means looking at the reasons people might be especially vulnerable - such as poverty or inequality - and trying to address those risks.
Alice McClure, of the University of Cape Town in South Africa, is working with communities in Durban, South Africa, and Harare, Zimbabwe, using transdisciplinary research to uncover pathways to transformative adaption in African cities, in the context of rapid urbanisation and climate change.

As Africa undergoes rapid urban growth, there is a narrow window of opportunity to harness the potential of cities as engines of economic growth. The rapid decline in oil and commodity prices has adversely affected resource-rich countries and signaled an urgent need for economic diversification in Africa. Urbanization and well managed cities provide a major opportunity to offer a springboard for diversification. Although it is not possible to predict the specific sector opportunities for diversification, the investments chosen need to be generic, supporting many specific activities.
Cities are just such generic capital: virtually whatever niches prove to be viable, they will take place in cities, and their success will require that cities work efficiently.
This presentation, based on ongoing World Bank, research examines if African cities are strengthening these springboards through higher economic density and proximity—to support clusters of firms, and to connect workers with firms more efficiently. Further, the research examines the extent to which cities are livable for poor and middle-class residents, through access to services, amenities, and housing – as these amenities keep a rein on workers’ living costs. The research highlights that African cities are on a development trajectory that poses excessive costs to residents and firms: Cities in Africa today cannot be characterized as economically dense, connected, and livable -- instead, they are crowded, disconnected, and costly for households and firms. The research also examines the implications of these development patterns for growth and inclusion and highlights the importance of reforming land markets and urban regulations, alongside coordinated early infrastructure investments.

With a population of nearly six million, Cape Town is the second city of South Africa. Many of the richest people in the country have ocean villas there. But there is a dark side to this breathtakingly beautiful city. Three thousand people a year are murdered in Cape Town, making it the most dangerous city in Africa.
Shootings are commonplace, especially in the townships. Some townships have become no-go areas, plagued by murders, violent robberies and illicit trade of every kind. The police are pushed beyond their limits by the level of violence. Many locals choose to carry guns to defend themselves. Some even turn vigilante, while the middle classes barricade themselves into houses that are increasingly heavily fortified.
When they do leave their homes, people are constantly on the alert for potential threats. Last year over 18,000 people in South Africa were the victims of a carjacking at gun point. People have little to no faith in the police, as so many of these crimes remain unsolved. Some invest in panic buttons which they always carry with them. Just one quick press of the red button, and an armed response team from a private company rushes to the client’s rescue.
Manenberg, 15 kilometres from the city centre, serves as headquarters for a notorious gang who call themselves “The Americans.” They are violent drug dealers who flood the streets of Manenberg with “tik” a local version of crystal meth. Their rivals the “Dixie Boys” run protection rackets, and the gangs frequently fight for territory.
The police struggle to enforce the law, but the gangsters have no fear of prison. On the contrary, it helps them to gain status with their peers. Witnesses often refuse to speak to the police in fear of their lives.
With interviews and exceptional access, this film tells the tragic stories of beautiful Cape Town, one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
This film was first released in 2022.

The 10 WEALTHIEST CITIES In Africa 2022 | Richest African Cities.
According to Forbes' most recent estimate of billionaires from Africa, the continent's list of high net worth individuals is significantly bigger.
According to the Africa wealth report, private wealth in Africa amounts to around 2 trillion dollars as of December 20 20. According to the report, Africa has 22 billionaires, 80,000 multimillionaires, and an estimated 125,000 millionaires with a net worth of more than one million dollars.
According to numerous independent reports, the number is anticipated to grow in the coming decade.
The Africa Wealth Report, released annually by New World Wealth from a Mauritius-based average of banks, lists Africa's wealthiest cities in terms of private wealth held. According to the research, a city's total wealth is defined as the private wealth possessed by all of its residents, which includes all of its assets such as real estate, cash, equities, business interests, and so on.
According to the Africa Wealth Report, Africa's luxury business would generate 6.1 billion dollars in revenue by 20 20. South Africa has the continent's largest luxury sector, which is followed by Kenya and Morocco. Despite the continent's well-known challenges and image as a developing market, the luxury sector is still paying off, as Africa's total private wealth is predicted to increase by 30% by 2030, reaching 2.6 trillion dollars. This growth will be driven by strong growth in the billionaire incentive in fast-growing economies such as Ethiopia Mauritius, Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda.

Through photography, Mutua invites us to see that beauty and tragedy can co-exist and none is more powerful than the other. It is therefore up to us to find a way to reconcile their co-existence "He describes himself as an artist born and bred in Machakos and fine-tuned by Nairobi. A Ford Foundation fellow, Mutua is known for his exquisite work as a travel and architectural photographer. He believes cities and buildings say a lot about the people living in them and has honed this skill to influence the stories told of cities in Africa and around the world.
Mutua was part of an epic road trip dubbed Unscrambling Africa that saw him visit 10 African countries, through 13 cities with the aim of exploring African urbanity, architecture & culture. In his first ever showcase, Mutua and David Blackman in conjunction with the UN-Habitat launched a campaign named ‘I’m A City Changer’, that encouraged city dwellers around the world to focus on what they love about their city. Above all this, Mutua attributes his joy and motivation to his family. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
