Furthermore, in countries such as South Africa, where apartheid was once a deeply ingrained practice, racial tension remains high, and xenophobia-related violence often still occurs. Gathering statistics from Numbeo.com, here is Positive Africa’s ranking of the top 10 most dangerous cities in Africa for both citizens and visitors. Numbeo's multifactorial analyses take into account such considerations as people feelings on the level of crime therein, recent changes in crime levels, safety walking alone, fears of muggings or robberies, vehicular security, perceived threat of assault, being annoyed, harassed, insulted, or solicited by locals, racial, ethnic, and religious intolerance, and the threat of property theft. African Smart Cities: Smart African Countries.
African development can be defined from Marcus Garvey’s perspective as a constant and consistent search for self-improvement. Indeed, before now and then, Africans, like all other human beings, constantly and consistently strive to improve their stands in all aspects.
The notion of Smart Cities has become a story on the lips of many in the continent. But what are smart cities, or what makes a city smart?
A smart city is a region or geographical location that uses digital and electronic technology, and infrastructure to collect data, monitor city operations, share information in real time, and much more.
10 cities from 9 African countries you know, have been listed in the 20 23 edition of the Smart Cities Index, produced by the International Institute for Management Development, based in Switzerland.
These cities have been proven to have many benefits such as an increased focus on sustainability, better security systems, more efficient communication, and less crime.
Before these rankings were made, the I.M.D surveyed more than 14 thousand people from African cities about their perception of the impact of technology in five main areas, including mobility, health and safety, activities, opportunities, and governance.
According to I.M. D’s officials, there are two pillars for which perceptions from various individuals are solicited when discussing Smart Cities. The Structures Pillar refers to the existing infrastructures of the cities, and the Technology Pillar describes the technological landscape and services available to the population.

Africa is a continent that is rapidly expanding in terms of population, and this is reflected most clearly in its various sprawling urban populations. The top fifteen most populous cities on this continent all have in excess of two million residents. Nigeria's Lagos is the largest city in Africa, with a minimum population of nine million (some estimates say the population is more than twice that number) – it is also one of the fastest-growing cities in the world, so the number is sure to increase. This is followed by Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Cairo in Egypt, each with populations of around 7.7 million.
Some of the largest African countries, such as Nigeria and South Africa, have multiple cities with very large populations. In addition to Lagos, Nigeria is home to the cities of Kano and Ibadan, both of which have around 3.5 million residents, making them huge cities in their own right. Cape Town, in South Africa, also has a population of almost 3.5 million, but the South African city of Durban is not far behind at 3.1 million. South Africa is also home to Johannesburg, with its two million residents, as well as Soweto and Pretoria, each with 1.6 million residents.
However, these and other African countries also have many smaller cities. Egypt may have one of the largest African cities in Cairo, but it also has one of the smallest with the city of Disuq and its 102,037 residents. In fact, a large number of African cities have populations of around 100,000, including Katumba in Tanzania, Khemisset in Morocco, and Lubango in Angola. Given the size of the continent of Africa, it is not surprising that there are also plenty of 'mid-sized' cities with populations of around a million. Among these are Port Elizabeth in South Africa (967,677), Tripoli in Libya (1.1 million), and Lusaka in Zambia (1.2 million).
