Transformative adaptation to climate change in southern African cities
When people think about how to adapt to climate change, often they focus on managing climate risk: the climate hazards such as droughts or floods that people are exposed to. But understanding climate adaptation more systematically means looking at the reasons people might be especially vulnerable - such as poverty or inequality - and trying to address those risks.
Alice McClure, of the University of Cape Town in South Africa, is working with communities in Durban, South Africa, and Harare, Zimbabwe, using transdisciplinary research to uncover pathways to transformative adaption in African cities, in the context of rapid urbanisation and climate change.
