Other Desires: The African City examines the ways in which rapid urbanization on the African continent in the twenty-first century has given rise to increasing speculation about African cities as sites of innovation and creativity amongst spatial practitioners, artists, and musicians, as well as cultural, economic and academic institutions globally. The one-day conference considers emerging spatial practices, urban narratives and identities within African cities, but also the ways in which African cities provide a conceptual framework through which to interrogate notions of desire, liberation, beauty, memory, the reinvention of traditions, and belonging that the modern city embodies.

African cities account for over 50% of the regions GDP. Since the pandemic hit the globe, urban areas have been the epicenter of COVID-19 with over 95% cases. Cities are mostly affected because as we know they are the gateway from other continents. Looking at the structure of African cities there is a lot of concentration of risks due to the congestion in our cities.The limitation in infrastructure whether in health or physical infrastructure also puts cities at a higher risk of infections. Measures that have been taken by various governments to curb the virus spread, have escalated adverse social-economic impacts.

So, what does this mean when it comes to resilience of cities ?

Background
COVID-19 has presented unprecedented challenges, and opportune moments for city development. The pandemic has had implications on the social setting, the economic status, the ecological environment, and the policy and regulation scapes of urban societies. The nature of what might emerge in terms of city resilience particularly in the African context is speculative at best, but one which requires an understanding of what has been (based on current evidence), what is desired (resilient city imaginaries), and the necessary (disruptive) socio-technical, economic, and policy actions for future African Cities.

This seminar series is part of the preparatory seminars organised around the three conference themes: Climate Action and Sustainable Energy; Cities and Resilience; Science Technology and Innovation. The themes are critical areas for Africa’s transition to sustainable developed economies in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

The overall output of the preparatory seminars and the main conference (The ARIN International Conference ‘Africa in the Post-COVID-19 World: Lessons for Research and Policy’) is a book volume titled ‘Africa in the Post-COVID-19 World: Lessons for Research and Policy’ that will be edited by Prof. Mark Pelling & Dr. Joanes Atela.

Top 10 Largest African Cities by 2100
Hello Displorers, Welcome back to another informative video and thanks for watching, In this video, we shall be looking at which cities will be the largest by the end of the 21st century. As the world continues to urbanize, a handful of cities will account for much of the growth. Between 2018 and 2100, the U.N. estimates 68 percent of urbanization will occur in India, China and Africa alone. Today about 4.2 billion people live in cities, with North America, Latin America and the Caribbean making up the most urbanized regions of the world and Africa remaining the most rural. By the year 2100, it’s estimated that 13 of the world’s largest megacities will be located in Africa. Meanwhile, India will hold three of them – and there will be zero of them found in the Americas, China, or Europe. Tokyo the capital of Japan is currently the most populous city in the world with over 39 million but will be no where near the top 10 most populous cities in the world by 2100 due to low birth rate and aging population.

Africa will explode in terms of population by the end of the 21st century and as such African cities need to get ready on how they will managed these massive population . So according to powerful research from the Global Cities institute, these African cities will be the largest by 2100.

10. Kampala (Uganda) - Population – 40.1 Million
By the end of the 21st century, Uganda will be the 10th most populous city in Africa and the 16th in the world. Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda. The city proper was estimated to have a population of 1,650,800 people on 31 July 2019 and the Metro is extimated at 6.7 million people. With an increase in Migration into Uganda’s capital city for greener pasture and an increase in birthrate, Kampala’s population is expected to explode in the next 80 years. The population will increase to about 40.1 million people and it is extimated that overcrowding in Kampala will increase hardship if the Uganda government does not start looking for means on how the population will be sustained.
9. Cairo (Egypt) – Population - 40.5 Million
Cairo is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Arab world. Its metropolitan area, with a population of over 20 million, is the second largest in Africa, the largest in the Arab world, and the Middle East, and the 6th-largest in the world. With a population of about 10 million in 1990, Cairo has grown to be the second most populous city in Africa after lagos. The drastic increase in population in cairo made the Egyptian government to start the construction of a new city to accommodate the excess population. Though the population growth rate of Cairo will not be as drastic as the other cities on this list, the population of cairo will however double by 2100. Egypt as a country is striving towards becoming a fully developed country and a lot comes with being a developed country such as low Birth rate, High life expectancy and strict laws on migration. All these will make the population of cairo not to grow as much as other African cities with way smaller population than cairo.
8. Blantyre city (Malawi) - Population – 40.9 Million
Blantyre city is one of the lesser Known cities in Africa but will become one of Africa’s mega cites by the end of the 21st century. Blantyre is Malawi's centre of finance and commerce, and its second largest city, with an enumerated 800,264 inhabitants as of 2018. It is sometimes referred to as the commercial and industrial capital of Malawi as opposed to the political capital, Lilongwe. It is the capital of the country's Southern Region as well as the Blantyre District. By the end of year 2000, Blantye city had a population of bare over 500.000 people. It currently has a population of about 900.000 people but according to the current population growth rate it is estimated that the population of Blantyre will explode in the next 80 years to over 40.9 million which is insane. High birth rate will be the main cause of this explosion. With the current population the city currently has a population density of over 3000 people by km2 imagine what the population density will be by 2100.
7. Lilongwe (Malawi) – Population - 41.3 Million
Still in Malawi, Lilongwe will surpass many Africa cities to be the 7th most populous city in Africa in terms of population and 13th in the world. Lilongwe is the capital and most populated city of the African state of Malawi. It had a population of 989,318 as of the 2018 Census, up from a population of 674,448 in 2008. In 2020 that figure currently stands at 1,122,000. The city is located in the central region of Malawi, in the district of the same name, near the borders with Mozambique and Zambia, and it is an important economic and transportation hub for central Malawi.
