The term Smart Cities might conjure up ideas of robots, flying cars and buildings that know what you want before you do. But according to UP researchers, Smart Cities are cities where everyone has jobs and food, different parts of the city work together to make for a better place to live, and these improvements are driven by gathering and using data in the best way possible.

UP’s Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT) believes that by harnessing the power of the fourth industrial revolution and Engineering 4.0, we can solve African urban challenges like food security, inequality, and energy vulnerability. That’s what really makes a city smart.

However, it seems like some are still ignorant to certain facts about the continent of Africa. In this day and age, some still think that Africa is one country which is totally wrong.

Africa is a diverse continent with over 1.3 billion people and is known for its wildlife, unique cultures, and vast landscapes. Though Africa is mostly known for poverty and other negative images, however many of the countries in Africa are working towards economic growth and development, and several have made significant progress in recent years. The cities and towns in Africa are vibrant, bustling, and full of life, and each offers a unique experience for those who visit.

From Cairo's ancient pyramids to the vibrant streets of Lagos and the natural beauty of Cape Town, Africa is a continent that offers something for everyone.

Water for African Cities Programme facilitates the adoption of measures to ensure access to environmentally sound water and sanitation service provision to the un-served, as well as improved access for underserved populations of the target cities. Through demonstration projects and capacity building interventions carried out in collaboration with national partners, regional and international financial institutions, the programme supports water supply and sanitation utilities, local governments, NGOs and communities to leverage resources for scaling up and replication at the country level.

As Africa continues to develop, more people are migrating from rural settlements to cities in search of a better life. And the prosperous ones are buying more cars to ease mobility. Unfortunately, having both new and very old cars on the road, coupled with bad roads, traffic jams becomes inevitable.
