Held captive in a small room in his house, her kidnapper brings back the food with a nasty smile: she knows that this could be her last dinner before he “gets rid of her tonight.” The memory of watching CSI with her brother flashes back to her mind — she is determined to fight until the last moment, so she grabs the pizza box, and becomes her own detective.

The largest gathering of people on the African continent is on this patchwork of islands and peninsulas on the coast of the gulf of guinea..Lagos.

It’s one of the 20 largest cities cities in the world.

But it’s also the second worst city to live in, only doing better than the capital of Syria, which is in the middle of a civil war. And a big part of WHY, has to do with its geography and it’s early history. The strange way in which Lagos is laid out, tangled between land and water is an essential part of its soul.

The first outside explorers said no one in their right minds would plan to build a big city on such an unusual configuration of lagoon and island.

Yet, here Lagos stands, 21 million people strong. And it wasn’t always this way.

Iran's military continued into a second day of drone exercises on Thursday (August 25), state media reported.

Footage showed various types of drones being launched and dropping munitions on desert targets.

The two-day drills were reported by state TV to involve 150 drones and cover Iran's Gulf coast and most of its territory. The country's air-defences and "electronic warfare" capabilities were also to be tested against mock enemy drones.

The exercises come amid U.S. fears Iran could supply drones to Russia for use in the conflict in Ukraine. The United States said earlier this month that Russian officials were being trained in Iran as part of an agreement on the transfer of drones between the two countries, and accused Tehran of planning to supply hundreds of unmanned aircraft to Moscow for use in Ukraine.

Deadly protests that erupted in South Africa following former President Jacob Zuma’s jailing showed no signs of letting up, even as the authorities pledged to clamp down on the violence and the army was deployed to help the police keep it in check.

Hundreds of stores in the KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces, which account for about half the nation’s economic output, were looted and major highways have been blocked. The government says 10 people have died. KwaZulu-Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala put the toll at 26 in his province alone and his Gauteng counterpart David Makhura said there’d been 19 fatalities in his jurisdiction, including 10 that occurred during a stampede.

Rioting continued on Tuesday in several Gauteng townships, including Alexandra, Diepsloot, Vosloorus and Mamelodi, although calm prevailed in Johannesburg’s city center, which bore the brunt of the violence on Monday.

Broadcaster eNCA screened live pictures of a mob looting a warehouse complex near the eastern port city of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday, and violence prompted the provincial health department to halt its coronavirus vaccination program. Stores were also targeted in East London in the Eastern Cape province, although demonstrations there weren’t as bad as other areas, its acting spokesman Mxolisi Spondo said by phone.
