The Star-Spangled Banner dates back to 1814 when the poem 'Defence of Fort M'Henry' by Francis Scott Key was paired with an existing melody by John Stafford Smith, 'To Anacreon in Heaven'. In 1931 it became the official national anthem of the USA, beating out other contenders including America the Beautiful, Hail Columbia, and My Country 'Tis Of Thee.
